— our small story
We came for the
light, and stayed
for the bread.
Solene opened in the summer of 2018, in a corner of Cascais that smells of olive trees and the sea. The space was a small linen shop. We kept the stone tiles and the smell of the open window.
Seven years later, the menu has changed gently. The light has not.
— our philosophy
A cafe is a slow gift. We try to give ours generously — and only the things we mean.
Sun
We follow the light through the day. The tables move with it. The menu does too.
Source
Oil from one grove. Tomatoes from one farm. Coffee from one cooperative. Smaller is honest.
Slowness
Plates arrive when they are ready, not when they are summoned. The water stays cold for as long as you need.
— in five marks
Seven summers in five small chapters.
2018
A small door opens
We took over the old linen shop. Painted nothing. Brought one espresso machine, three borrowed chairs.
2019
The bakery joins
Inês moved from her grandmother's kitchen to ours. The first croissant left the oven at six in the morning.
2021
The terrace
We opened the back wall to the garden. Six tables under a fig tree, the same one we still trim ourselves.
2023
The brunch room
The corner shop next door became ours. We did very little to it. The sun did the rest.
2025
Seven summers
Most of the team has been here longer than the menu. The morning regulars know each other's children.
— handcraft, not theatre
Each cup is poured by a hand that remembers yours.
We do not chase perfect. We chase honest — beans rested fourteen days, water at the right temperature, milk steamed without violence. The drink is small, quiet, and the better for it.
— a small neighbourhood
We learn names slowly. We forget them slowly too.
Long shared tables for conversation. Quiet corners for books and journals and laptops alike. Three suppers a season — fifteen seats, always one empty for whoever needs it most.
— the small team
The hands behind solene.
A short list. Most of us have been here longer than the menu. We grow slowly, and only when someone joins who already feels like a friend.
